{"id":2118,"date":"2020-09-15T16:34:37","date_gmt":"2020-09-15T15:34:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alsatia.org.uk\/site\/?page_id=2118"},"modified":"2020-11-30T15:18:22","modified_gmt":"2020-11-30T15:18:22","slug":"1712-the-deplorable-case-of-the-poor-people-in-the-mint","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/alsatia.org.uk\/site\/documents\/1712-the-deplorable-case-of-the-poor-people-in-the-mint\/","title":{"rendered":"1712: The Deplorable Case of the poor People in the Mint"},"content":{"rendered":"<header>\n<h3><span class=\"head\">The Deplorable CASE of the poor People in the <span class=\"hi\">Mint,<\/span> humbly Offer&#8217;d to the Charitable Consideration of the Honourable, the <span class=\"hi\">Com\u00admons<\/span> of <span class=\"hi\">Great Britain<\/span> in Parliament As\u00adsembled.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<p>That thro&#8217; the Decay of Trade, and other great Losses, during the late and present Warr; as also thro&#8217; the Excessive Crowd of Foreigners, who have encroach&#8217;d on them in their respective Callings, have there\u00adby fail&#8217;d: and to avoid perrishing in Prison, were forc&#8217;d to run into the <span class=\"hi\">Mint<\/span> for shelter, where many of them lye on the Ground in a starving Con\u00addition for want of House-room, which makes their Condition as miserable as those of the Common side in <span class=\"hi\">Newgate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And whereas it&#8217;s suppos&#8217;d, that Men of Substance come into the <span class=\"hi\">Mint,<\/span> with a Design to Defraud their Creditors, which throw&#8217;s an Odium on the poorer sort, who Abhor such unjustifiable practices, and are willing to submit their Conditions to the strictest Examination.<\/p>\n<p>That by Relieving such, the Men of Substance will be expos&#8217;d to the power of the Law. And if thought fit, a Clause may be inserted, wherein it shall be <span class=\"hi\">Premunire<\/span> in any Man to Resist a Legal Process.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"hi\">Wherefore they most humbly refer their unheard of Misery and Di\u00adstress to this August Assembly as your Own poor Natives, and most humbly Pray, that out of your Charitable Goodness, you will please to allow them the full benefit of the Act for Relief of Insolvent Debtours in as ample a mannor as if Actually Prisoners in the several Goales in and about the Cities of<\/span> London <span class=\"hi\">and<\/span> Westminster.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"closer\"><p><span class=\"hi\">And they shall ever Pray,<\/span> &amp;c.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/ota.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/repository\/xmlui\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.12024\/B02631\/B02631.html?sequence=5&amp;isAllowed=y\">EEBO-TCP at the Oxford Text Archive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Note: The English Short Title Catalogue has two entries for this item, dating one as <a href=\"http:\/\/estc.bl.uk\/R174604\">possibly from 1700<\/a>, the other as <a href=\"http:\/\/estc.bl.uk\/T186146\">possibly from 1712<\/a>.
